Problem

Wonderblend is Temple Coffee Roasters' seasonal blend, known for playful tasting notes: strawberry wine, cherry candy, and gooseberry in some years, pink lemonade, blue raspberry, or honeydew melon in others. The coffee origins rotate annually to celebrate seasonal curiosities, from a trio of natural-processed coffees across India, Bali, and Java to single-estate coffees from Ethiopia and Costa Rica.

The design challenge starts with format. Temple's retail bag label is small, and building a full seasonal concept inside it, one that carries the flavor story and still feels distinct from the year before, is the constraint every release has to solve first.

Process

Every release starts with the label. Once that concept is set, everything else builds from it: merchandise, in-café signage, and the direction for that year's product photography, developed together with Temple's creative director and social media manager using the label as our shared reference point.

What stays consistent year to year is the intent: Wonderblend is the one release where Temple steps outside its everyday visual restraint. What changes is the world built around that idea; each year takes "wonder" somewhere new instead of repeating the same formula.

Constraints

The label is small. Every concept has to work at that scale first, then extend outward to merchandise and photography.

Three Years, One System

2024

A fruity, candy-wrapper feel, matching that year's punchy fruit notes with the bright, saturated look of a candy label rather than a typical coffee bag.

2025

A shift toward the mystical: flavor notes suspended in clouds, raining down over a fantastical landscape that converges into a fountain of coffee at the center.

Accompanying merchandise, 2025

2026

Pushed further into the mystical, drawing from M.C. Escher's impossible architecture: staircases and buildings winding through oversized fruit representing that year's flavor notes, each detailed with its own windows and towers.

Result

Customers look forward to Wonderblend on two levels each year: the blend itself, and the label. It has become the one release where people expect Temple to push furthest outside its everyday branding, so the design itself is now part of what people anticipate each season, not just packaging for the coffee inside it.
